When a business needs a video, the first question is often about length. Should we make a brand film or a few short videos for social media? I would start somewhere else: what should the video help someone understand or feel?
For me, a cinematic atmosphere is not measured in minutes. A short video can hold an idea, a feeling and a small story of its own. A longer film needs a reason to be longer. Beautiful images alone do not explain why someone should keep watching.
A brand film and a short video can be the same thing
A brand film describes a purpose: the impression a business wants to leave and what makes its work interesting. Short-form video describes format and duration. One piece can do both.
I would therefore avoid treating them as a simple either-or choice. Sometimes a business needs one strong film for its website. Sometimes a series of videos, each answering one customer question, is more useful. And sometimes the right approach is to plan both together.
When does a brand film make sense?
A brand film can work well when you want people to feel something about your business. A launch, a new direction, a website redesign or an introduction to your expertise might be that moment. Viewers do not need to learn everything about the company, but they should understand why it matters to them.
During planning, I ask what we want to show and what we want the viewer to experience. People, places, sound and small details in the work can say more than a long list of services. Explore my approach to brand video production.
When are short videos useful for a business?
Short videos suit a focused subject: a product in use, a customer question, an employee's perspective or a moment from an event. A series can show different sides of the work without trying to fit everything into a single piece.
Planning for social media starts during the shoot. Vertical framing, space for text, sound and the opening image all shape how the video works in its intended channel. Cropping a horizontal film afterwards does not always preserve the original idea. That is why I like to agree the purpose of short-form videos beforehand.
Three different starting points from my own work
Nothing: an independent idea in a short format
The Nothing headphone spec ad I made with Jussi Kurttio grew from our own idea and a wish to experiment. It was an independent concept, not a campaign commissioned by Nothing. What interests me here is how a short piece can still create its own visual world and recognisable atmosphere.
Sami Leino: several perspectives on one event
Covering Sami Leino's Aineeton project in Turku brought photography and video together. An exhibition and launch event can be presented as a highlight film, while individual moments also work as separate posts. The same event offers different possibilities when those uses are considered before filming.
Canon Nordic: a product within real creative work
In my collaboration with Canon Nordic, the camera was part of the creative process and the work behind it. A product story feels different when it shows what someone makes with the tool. The product, the creator and the finished work can all belong to the same story.
Can one production deliver both?
Yes, when it is planned for that purpose. We can shoot individual moments alongside the main film or create shorter edits from shared footage. Every scene will not necessarily work in every format. A short version needs its own opening and ending, rather than an arbitrary cut from a longer film.
- Where will the main film appear, and what should it communicate?
- Which individual subjects will the shorter videos cover?
- Do we need vertical and horizontal versions, captions or different languages?
- Where will the material be used, and which usage rights will we agree?
- Who will publish the content, and when is it needed?
These decisions shape the scope. A fixed number of videos does not tell the whole story: scripting, locations, sound and finishing can vary considerably. My guide to video production pricing explains the factors in more detail.
One film or an ongoing flow of content?
If the need is connected to a specific launch or change, a standalone production can be a natural fit. If there are new stories to tell regularly, it makes sense to plan further ahead. What matters is having the ability and a plan to use the material once it is ready.
In my article about a content shoot day for a business, I explain how photography and video can be planned as one production.
Let's start with what you want to say
I work on video productions in Turku and across Finland. I want to find the idea within each project: what is worth telling about this business, person or product?
You do not need to know whether you need a brand film or short videos yet. Tell me about your idea or book a free introductory call, and we can work out what would serve it best.
