Business photography in Turku – images that feel like you

How do you plan business photography in Turku? Jere Alanen shares local examples of staff, workplace and event photography, and how to prepare for a shoot.

In this article

When planning a business photo shoot, the conversation often turns to how many images are needed and where to take them. Those details matter, but I first want to understand something else: what is this business like, who works behind it, and what should the photographs say?

I am based in Turku, and much of my photography takes place here and in the surrounding region. The setting might be a new store, an exhibition launch or an event bringing people together. What connects them is the need to show the work in a way that feels like the people behind it.

What should your business photographs communicate?

I am interested in people, story and the small details we do not always stop to notice. A workplace, someone's way of doing their job or a conversation at an event can say a great deal about how a business actually works.

A strong visual style is part of my work. Colour, contrast and atmosphere matter to me, but in a client project they grow around the subject. I want the business to recognise itself in the images and the viewer to connect with something real.

That is why I start by asking where the photographs will be used. A website homepage, staff profile, event announcement and regular social posts call for slightly different things. Once the intended use is clear, planning the shoot becomes easier.

Business photography in Turku and the surrounding region: three starting points

Business photography can mean much more than a single staff portrait. These three projects show different sides of it in my own work.

Veke: the people and the store together

A photography assignment connected to the opening of Veke Home Oy's new store in Raisio brought together staff portraits and interior and exterior images. I photographed the team using studio lighting set up on location and also documented the environment they work in.

The combination interests me: people give the business a face, while the space shows customers where they are going. Both can be planned within one assignment when the practical arrangements and shooting order are agreed beforehand. See the Veke Raisio store photography project.

Sami Leino: the work and the moments around it

The opening of Sami Leino's Aineeton exhibition, together with the launch of his poetry collection and novel at Dopart in Turku, offered a different setting. I combined photography and video to document the works, the audience and the atmosphere.

At an event, I am also interested in what happens around the programme. What makes someone pause? How do people look at the work or meet each other? These moments give the event its own character. Explore the Aineeton project story.

TBMC: conversations at Panimoravintola Koulu

Turku Brain and Mind Center's fifth networking event took place at Panimoravintola Koulu in Turku. I photographed the gathering, documenting the participants, their encounters and the atmosphere.

At a networking event, people and their interactions naturally sit at the heart of the story. The image selection needs both a sense of the surroundings and moments observed more closely. View the TBMC event photo gallery.

How should a business prepare for a photo shoot?

You do not need a finished shot list. Start by telling me what the photographs are for and what is happening in your business. These points will already take us a long way:

  • Intended use: are the images for a website, staff profiles, social media, printed material or a campaign?
  • Subjects: do you need people, spaces, products, work in progress or event coverage?
  • Location and participants: where will we shoot, who will be involved, and how will photography fit around the rest of the day?
  • Atmosphere: what feels right about your existing visual identity, and what would you like to show differently?
  • Timing and scope: when are the finished images needed, and what kind of project are we discussing?

Before the shoot, we agree the image selection, editing, file formats and usage rights. I also help with direction during portraits. You do not need to arrive knowing how to pose.

The location does not have to be a separate studio

Your own premises can be exactly the right setting. They contain your work, materials and people. For the Veke project, portrait lighting was also set up inside the store. When choosing a location, I consider how the light, background and available space support the intended look.

Turku also offers opportunities for outdoor portraits, but I would choose the location around the subject and the purpose of the images. The background should belong to the whole. Weather and changing light are part of the planning, with an alternative considered beforehand when needed.

What affects the price and the material we can create?

The price of business photography depends on the scope. Planning, shooting time, image numbers, editing, usage rights and any additional arrangements all contribute. You can find service descriptions and published prices on my photography page; we agree the production that suits your particular needs together.

If you need images for several channels, mention that early. A wide website image and a vertical social post do not always come from the same crop. Video can also be planned into the production when it has a clear purpose and enough time is available. I discuss this further in What can one shoot day produce for a business?
